In the PNW we have to deal with rain, rain, and more rain. Unfortunately, many homes were built without proper attention to detail when it comes to weatherproofing and durability. Deck construction and flashing is no exception. Over the last few years I have seen MANY improperly built decks that do not include flashing, poor connection to the "rim" joist of the house, and a lack of good drainage. These decks became rotten, unsightly, and often dangerous. Be sure to look at the details when building your deck or purchasing a new home.
